The shelters of our mounts are the bookmark of an history nearly forgotten. The history of many generations that, before us, have lived and worked in this territory, with passion and hard work.
From the half of the 1700 the necessity to procure forage for the cattle has induced the peasants to overwork the meadows at high altitude, carefully cleaned up from stones and the weeds: still today a lot of stones scattered on mounts are the proof of this "maintenance". On the meadows or in the neighbourhood the peasants have constructed their shelters, in order to stop sleeping at night, to protect the family from the bad weather, in some cases in order to live here all the year: they have used what there was, above all stone and wood.
From the last post-war period, when the haymaking works have been dropped, the shelters are remained empty. The water, the wind and the time have used up in many cases the wood structures, causing the roof collapse.
But in the last twenty years a lot of shelters has been renewed, thanks to the new inhabitants of the mountain: the hikers, often volunteers of associations tied to the territory. Through the collaboration between the volunteers and the Comonità Montana Argentea, we tried to avoid that this humble and precious historical heritage will be lost, testimony of the life and the work of many generations.
And for the hiker, to enter in a shelter doesn’t mean only to make a rest along the way, but also to feel the mountain, sometime wild and strange, as a more familiar and surer place.
For who wishes to know the position, the characteristics and the history of these simple and strange constructions, a map of the territory and a presentation of all the shelters are available.
For an ulterior widening, it is possible to consult the publication of the Comunità Montana Argentea "Shelters of our mounts".
